Manly Carnival
After the Country Carnival successes
last week a much smaller competition
team travelled to Manly for what is one
of the most competitive carnivals
outside State and Australian Titles The
Manly carnival is traditionally known
to be a mini Australian Titles, it
attracts the very best competitors from
every state This level of competition
serves well to prepare for the upcoming
State (2nd - 5th March ) and Australian
Titles ( 14th -22nd March ).
Boaties
Six Mollymook boat crews recently
made the trip to Manly to fight out a
very tough competition in challenging
5 sets, with 40 Open, 70
reserve,70 womens and 30 Junior
crews converging on Manly Beach from
all over Australia.
The reserve crew of Steve Hegarty,
Steve Creech, Craig Matthews and Russ
Bartlett was swept by Garth Brook and
made it right through to the Semi
-Finals. Two junior male crews in their
hardest competition to date remained
composed to reach Semi Finals.
Jeff Loys crew of Wes Bean, Chad
Venables, Neil Sullivan and Mitchell
Brook went into the carnival as Country
Gold medalists and rowed two firsts
then a third in their heats, before the
4th round saw them hit by a big wave to
eliminate chances of them progressing
to the final in the knockout
competition, they'll bounce back better
than ever .
Both Womens Crews made it through to
the second round impressively.
Beachies
As was the case last week at
Pambula an under strength Mollymook
Beach team competed at Manly, but the
main highlight of the day for Mollymook
was the great form of Peter Howcroft
who was snubbed by NSW Country
selectors for the current New Zealand
Tour, , he was dominant in the U19
beach flags, Sprint and Open Relay,
Another highlight was the long awaited
return of former U16 Australian
Beachflags Champion Scott Richardson.
Scott was an Olympic Games probable
Sprint runner in Sydney 2000 but just
missed final selection.
Scott now 23 has been missing from Surf
Carnivals for 4 years but must have
been happily surprised when his
appearance at Manly was acknowledge by
many after he blew the current
Australian beach Sprint champion away
in his first heat, then he won his
semi- final before placing 3rd in final
only a mere ½ a metre behind the
eventual winner from Western
Australia.Scott's Manly Carnival can
only be described as a very successful
return to the beach team.
Scott got down to fifth in the final of
the Open Beachflags but was
disqualified in a false start, he could
have finished in the medals with more
match practice. Glenn Lofts also
competed in the Open Sprint and beach
flags with Kurt Stolzenhiem and Todd
Muller after placing in their heats all
just missing the finals in the tough
competition.
Peter Howcroft a renown sprinter was
State champion only 2 years ago and is
an Australian beachsprint silver
medalist but must have been putting
extra training into flags recently as
he blew the opposition away on his way
to winning the U19 beach flags.
Current World and Australian Womens
Relay Champion runner Armelie Davidson
looked impressive in the Womens sprint
heats but missed the final. The up and
coming U19 beach Sprinter Melissa Cook
ran powerfully impressing in her
heats.
Peter Howcroft , won his heat easily at
Manly then powered away in his U19
semi-final before finishing fast to be
second in a very hard fought final.
Peter then teamed up with Kurt
Stolzenhiem, Scott Richardson and Todd
Muller in the Open relay to finish a
close second in what was an extremely
classy field.
Melissa Cook fought very hard,
impressing onlookers as she fought
through the U19 beach flags final,
Melissa later teamed up with Gemma Hill
, Gemma Smith and Ele Chapman to be
finalists in the U19 beach relay
final.
Manly organisers introduced a new
event, the Open Mixed relay and it was
a big success with many entries and
Gemma Hill, Melissa Cook , Kurt
Stolzenhiem and Peter Howcroft
combining and just missing the gold as
they won the silver.
Board and ski team
Manly is traditionally the very
toughest competition in the board and
Ski events. Gene Austin in his first
Manly Carnival on a board showed his
class when making the U19 board final
.Over 50 board paddlers started the
heats and it came down to 18 finalists,
Gene worked hard to finish tenth in the
final of the very best , . Geeno is
riding the crest of a wave as the major
carnivals approach, go for it Gene.
Zac Tate competed for Mollymook for the
first time in the U19 board and also
and gave a very impressive performance
but missed the final after his heat.
Dave Munday is just hoping to have
Gene, Zac and Adam Quealey all
available for Branch and State Titles,
what a fantastic board relay team they
will make.
Chris Brook entered the Open Board and
was one of seven competitors surfing in
on a single wave, all fighting for the
last place in the final and only a bit
of bad luck as Chris jumped off his
board cost him a place in the final of
one of Australias hottest Open
Board race fields. Well done Chris!
A review of Country Carnival places
last weekend gained Mollymook another
bronze medal in masters Ski for Neil
Blair, not the fourth place as
reported.
March Past
After winning gold at Country, the
March Past team was straight back into
training last Sunday and are competing
at the Freshwater Carnival today where
they will be up against the very best
in the State.
New Zealand Tri Series
The Tri Series between New Zealand,
NSW Country and NSW Central Coast
continues in NZ with NSW Country
leading the competition pointscore by
two points after two rounds.
After a warm up carnival on arrival and
the first round being dominated by
Mollymooks representatives the
second round at Rotorua offered stiffer
opposition but the lightening fast
Glenn Beveridge still won the Open
Sprint and beach flags, Tegan Davies
ran first in Open flags and a second in
a blanket finish for the Sprint.
Melissa Howard is competing in U19 and
the current Australian Open Champion
easily outclassed all to win the flags,
but was unfortunately disqualified in
the Sprint no breaks
policy.
Blaise Lofts competing in U16s is
following in big brother Steines
footsteps as he makes a mark on Beach
Carnivals he placed 3rd and 3rd in
sprint and flags.
Steines torn hamstring is being
treated but he seems certain to miss
more of this elite competition.
Summer Sippers
Drinks for all Members and invited
guests. A reminder to all members they
can have invited guests at Sippers on
Sunday afternoons from 5pm to enjoy
Mollymook Beach from the balcony and
bar upstairs. It is a great way to
finish a weekend as the kids play on
the grass and beach in front of the
clubhouse, come down and join the great
hospitality of John Patterson and Keith
Claxton while enjoying a refreshing
drink, the extra daylight of Summer and
friendship of club mates.
