As many members would be aware, on 2 August 2011, the Queensland Coroner delivered his findings and recommendations following a Coronial Inquest into the tragic death of Saxon Bird at the 2010 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.

SLSA has accepted the Coroner’s findings and is working diligently and deliberately to action each and every one these recommendations

.

In addition, SLSA is implementing the recommendations made by the Independent Panel’s Inquiry which SLSA commissioned through legal firm, Lander & Rogers Lawyers immediately after Saxon’s death.

SLSA will post the Coroner and the Independent Panel Reports on SLSA’s website from 10am on Monday 5 September, 2011. Regular updates will be posted on each action taken as they happen. This information will be available at sls.com.au/inquiries.

I would appreciate your assistance in sharing this information with members and supporters, and would welcome constructive feedback to ensure we collectively continue our commitment to constantly improve our standards for water and event safety for members, beach goers and the general community.

Through all of this let’s not forget that we lost a fine young Australian and lifesaver and our thoughts and prayers remain with the Bird family and our broader surf lifesaving community.

I would also like to let you know that we recently received an interview request from Channel 7’s Sunday Night program. They are investigating a story relating to Saxon’s death.

We chose not to participate in the interview. Instead our CEO, Brett Williamson, issued a statement to the program producer, which will be posted on our website on Monday morning. At this stage we are uncertain when the story will air but wanted to bring it to your attention.
